Directors

KATIE TERHUNE was an All-Area selection for three seasons at Warren Hills High School.. She holds the school record for points with over 1,500 in four years as a varsity starter. She is also Boston University’s All-Time Leading Scorer (1,971 points) and was one of two active players in the country to have her jersey retired before graduation. Katie was a three-time All- Conference Selection, New England Athlete of the Year Nominee and Most Outstanding Player for the America East Conference Tournament. She does private, group and team training during off-season.

MEGAN HAUGHEY was a four-year varsity starter, scored over 1,000 points, and guided her team to the Hunterdon-Warren Championship at North Hunterdon High School. Megan graduated from North Hunterdon with twelve varsity letters. She went on to play basketball at Lafayette College.  In 2004, Megan was named head coach at Phillipsburg High School, making her the youngest head coach in the state of New Jersey. Megan is currently pursuing her MSW at Rutgers University and also works in Student Affairs on the Cook / Douglass Campus.  Megan is also employed by Habitat for Humanity as a Global Village Trip Leader, leading groups of volunteers to international destinations.

JIMMY OSTASZEWSKI  coached at Marist High School in the 80’s at all levels:  Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity.  Teams during his time at Marist played in 5 County Championships, winning 3.  In 2003, Coach Ostaszewski was the assistant Varsity coach at Bayonne High School where he recorded 107 wins and only 22 losses.  At Bayonne, he played in 5 consecutive county championship games, winning 3 of the 5.  He has been an instructor at numerous girls and boys basketball camps throughout the Tri-State area.

Support Staff

BRUCE HICKS  has coached at the Kenny Smith Carolina Basketball camp for the past three years.  He also coached at the New York Knicks Basketball Camps and the Basketball City Youth Development League.  He has helped players develop the fundamentals of basketball and increase their basketball knowledge. Prior to coaching, Coach Hicks played professionally for the Harlem Strongdogs and Jersey Skycats.  He played his college basketball at New Jersey City University where he won the Division Three ECAC Championship in 1994.  Bruce is currently the assistant coach at Raritan Valley Community College.

JEN HILGENBERG  was named to the All-State second team following her junior and senior seasons at Immaculata High School. She holds the school scoring record with over 1,400 points in her four-year career. She was also elected the Most Valuable Player of her team for three consecutive years. Jen went on to earn a full basketball scholarship for Villanova University. At Villanova, Jen was a starter for both her junior and senior seasons. She was also named captain during her senior season campaign. Villanova was one of the top Big East schools during all four years, making multiple appearances in the NCAA tournament. During Jen’s junior year, Villanova upset number one UConn, breaking their 69 game winning streak to capture the Big East Conference Championship. In 2005, Jen was awarded the Big East Sportsmanship award.  Currently, Jen is the head girls’ basketball coach at Immaculata. The Star Ledger named her Coach of the Year in 2006.

DARYL SMITH is widely regarded as the premier Basketball Performance Enhancement Specialist.  He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Certified Weightlifting Coach.  Daryl’s playing experience includes a Team Captain for Rutgers University where he is among one of the top steals leaders in the program’s history.  Daryl went on to play basketball professionally in Italy and Croatia.  Recently, Daryl was a Featured Trainer for the 2007 Brand Jordan Breakfast Club Tour.   Nicknamed “D-TRAIN” by Houston Rockets Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy and Washington Wizards Head Coach Eddie Jordan for his intense style of play and his dedicated off-season training regimen, Performance Enhancement Specialist/Author, Daryl L. Smith continues to share his formula for basketball success. In 2002, Smith developed D-TRAINED, a unique and disciplined training regimen that combines Basketball Fundamentals, Explosive Weight-Training, and Pro-Style Speed, Agility, and Conditioning. His first book entitled “12 Necessary Steps for Basketball Success” was released in 2004 followed by “Basketball Strength, Speed and Skills Volume 1” DVD in the summer of 2005. He currently is the CEO and President of D-TRAINED Inc, a company designed to improve the performance level of elite high school, college and professional male and female basketball players.   Daryl’s company has been featured on local and international television programs such as NBA’s Inside Stuff, and ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, and the WB 11 Morning News, in addition to being showcased by Nike during the “Ball on Air 360 Tour.”  The D-TRAINED program has been utilized by the top players, coaches and teams at the high school, college and professional levels throughout the world. Numerous D-TRAINED participants have continued playing at the highest levels of basketball including the ACC, Big East, Atlantic 10, Conference USA and Professional Basketball. The demand for Daryl’s services has increased dramatically as he continues to be one of the most highly sought after guest speakers and instructors for many of the top basketball camps, programs and teams around the country. In addition to writing his own monthly newsletter “Full Timeout,” Daryl has also been a featured columnist for Stack Magazine, Scout.com, and High School Sports Media.

AAU Coaches

RICH CHMIEL  has coached in the Hoosiers Organization for the past two seasons.  He was the Assistant Varsity Coach at Colonia High School for 3 years.  Coach Chmiel has been an instructor for ten years at Summer Basketball Camps.

TOM CHMIEL  is presently the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Colonia High School.  He is a six time Division Coach of the Year, Conference Coach of the Year, Star Ledge Middlesex County Coach of the Year, and Home News Tribune All Area Coach of the Year.  Coach Chmiel was the Boys Head Coach at Woodbridge High School.  He has also be an instructor for Summer Basketball Camps in Woodbridge Township.

JEFF COATES  has a long standing history of coaching basketball in Hunterdon County. Coates began his head coaching career at Madison Central High School where he was the boys’ basketball coach for the 1985-1986 seasons. After serving as an assistant coach to various programs, he became the Voorhees High School Head Girls’ Coach in 1995, where he remained until 2000. Under Coates, the Lady Vikes soared to a 114-21 overall record and appeared in four sectional championships, four divisional championships, and three Hunterdon-Warren County championships. Coates graduated four 1,000-point scorers and was named Courier News Coach of the Year in both 1996 and 1999, Express Times Coach of the Year in 1997, and Star Ledger Coach of the Year in 2000.  From 2001 until 2007 Coates has served as the Bridgewater High School Head Girls’ Coach, where he won a divisional championship and graduated one 1,000-point scorer.

MARGO CONNORS  just finished her second season on the Lafayette women's basketball coaching staff. Her primary responsibilities included scouting and post player development. Connors was a four-year scholarship player at the University of Vermont, where she graduated with a degree in Engineering Management with a minor in Environmental Science in 1985. She received an MBA in Marketing Management from Pace University in New York in 1993.  She has played in a number of amateur and semi-pro leagues and participated in games to promote a professional women's basketball league, which came to fruition as the WNBA. After her playing days, Connors coached A.A.U. basketball before assuming a number of roles with the Voorhees High School program.  She began as the freshman coach, and also gained experience as the junior varsity coach and an assistant coach at the varsity level. Voorhees compiled a record of 72-25 with Connors on the bench.

IAN FRIEND-KANTER   is a recent graduate of Voorhees High School where he played varsity for 2 years.  Ian has coached travel and CYO leagues for 6 years. His mind set in coaching is not wins and losses, but to see future high school athletes get better.  Ian hates selfishness, and that is why his main goal in coaching is teamwork.  The only way to get better in games is to work hard in practice because you play like you practice.  His three biggest pet-peeves are turnovers, missed free throws and missed lay-ups.  Ian likes to push his players to the limits, only to see them succeed in the future.

MICKEY FREY is a 1972 graduate of Wilson Area High School where he participated in football and track. He coached girls basketball in the CBL for 4 years and also coached midget wrestling and football. He was President of the Wilson Varsity W Club for 8 years where he worked to support all boys and girls sports. He has been a master plumber for 16 years and owns his own business. He is an avid hunter who also enjoys sports of all kids. He is married with three children and one grandchild.

TONY FREY is currently the Varsity Boysʼ Assistant Coach at Phillipsburg High School.  He has coached Basketball at Phillipsburg at the Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels for the past eight years.  He also is a Varsity football coach, with seven years at Phillipsburg High School and one year at North Hunterdon High School.  He also was the Linebackerʼs coach at Muhlenburg College for one year.

ED FURMAN  is currently the Varsity Girls’ Assistant Coach at Phillipsburg High School. He was the Head Coach at Mount St. Dominic's for 5 years. Coach Furman has also been an instructor at the C. Vivian Stringer Girls’ Basketball Camps at Rutgers. Coach Furman is also the head baseball coach at Union Township School where he is a health and physical education teacher.

VINNIE GAYLE is a former Hudson county basketball star. He led Hudson County in scoring his senior year and was a Junior College Honorable Mention All-American. He then attended University of Missouri-Kansas City where he led his team in scoring, steals and assists. During his two years at UMKC he became the school’s 6th All Time Leading Scorer. Vinnie played with the Kansas City Kings (NBA) and then played professionally in San Juan, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.  Coach Gayle began coaching in early 90`s at the Recreation, High School and Junior College Levels.  Recently, Vinnie coached with the boys and girls programs at Christian Prep University in Louisiana.

RALPH GIORDANO, a graduate of SUNY Oneonta, has coached numerous youth sport teams over the last 20 years. Throughout both Rockland County, NY, and Hunterdon County, NJ, Ralph has been involved with recreation, CYO, travel, and club-level teams. The desire to coach with Hunterdon United is based on his belief in stressing fundamentals, conditioning, player development, and team play. In high school he was a three-time letter winner in basketball, lacrosse, and soccer, and continued his lacrosse career at SUNY Oneonta. Ralph worked closely with the U9/U10 girls’ team in 2007

BECKY GOETZ is a Hunterdon Central graduate where she played soccer and basketball. She graduated from Elon University and is now coaching basketball at Immaculata High School.

COURTNEY GOETZ was a three sport athlete at Hunterdon Central. She went on to be play soccer at Springfield College where she was a four year starter. In 2005, Courtney helped lead Springfield to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That same year Courtney was named First team All-NEWMAC Conference defensive player. Courtney now teaches and coaches basketball at North Hunterdon High School.

SAM HAIMANN is currently the head girls basketball coach at South Hunterdon High School. From 1994 to 2000 he was the junior varsity coach at Voorhees High School. In recent years Coach Haimann has coached football at both Elizabeth High School and South Hunterdon High School. In 1995 and 1996 he led the U12 and U13 Hunterdon Hoosiers to back-to-back New Jersey State Championships.

KRISTEN HAUGHEY graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School where she competed in field hockey, cross country, basketball, and outdoor track & field.  Kristen won 11 varsity letters at North Hunterdon and was an outdoor track & field All-American.  Kristen went on to compete in college athletics at the University of Virginia.  At UVA she ran cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field.  She had the opportunity to represent UVA at the ACC Championships.  In 2003-2004 Kristen was an assistant coach at North Hunterdon for the varsity cross country and girls' basketball programs.  That same year she was the outdoor track & field varsity throwing coach and an AAU basketball coach for the Lady Liners program.  Currently Kristen is a fourth-year medical student at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ and is going into Pediatrics.

MIKE HAUGHEY  graduated from North Hunterdon HS and is finishing his college career at Thomas Edison State College after two years at Penn State University. At North Hunterdon mike played both football and baseball. Mike currently coaches for the Junior Lions Football Program. Mike was an assistant coach with the U12 boys team in 2007.

TRACEY KARMEL played basketball and softball for 4 years at Chatham High School in New Jersey. She went on to play rugby at the College of New Jersey. She has coached at Chatham High School the past four summers with the freshman girls baskeballl team which includes the annual trip to the University of North Carolina women's basketball camp. Tracey is now a teach and the girls basketball Varsity assistant.

JOE KOZOH  is currently the Freshman Girls Basketball Coach at Delaware Valley Regional High School and has been coaching youth sports for over 27 years. He has coached and instructed both boys and girls athletics on both a recreational level and a competitive level in sports such as high school and Pop Warner football, baseball, softball, soccer and basketball. Joe’s ability to communicate game knowledge and strategy and team concepts along with individual skill development and personal growth has given both the player and parent trust and confidence in him as a coach and teacher. Joe’s dedication to coaching basketball involves attending yearly coaches clinics, coaching principles and ethics training as well as first aid, CPR and AED training. Joe also organizes, implements and instructs various Spring, Summer and Fall basketball clinics and camps in the Hunterdon County area.

KEVIN KUCHOVIA  began his coaching career in 1982 as an Assistant Coach for the men’s program at Atlantic Community College in Mays Landing, New Jersey.  After two seasons, Coach Kuchova became a member of the International Association of Basketball Officials.  As a high school official he refereed many regular season contests, County and State Tournament games including State Finals. He then became a member of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association and referred College basketball for 5 seasons.  During that period he continued to coach Recreation, Travel and AAU teams. He continues to be a student of the game and most enjoy teaching and sharing his experiences with younger players who also have a passion for the game.

MARK LINDABERRY  has been coaching Recreational Basketball for Washington Borough since 1995.  He also coached the boys’ 7th and 8th grade team at Franklin Township.  Coach Lindaberry has been coaching in the Hoosier program for the past two seasons.

JIM MANNING  has been coaching basketball ever since graduating from Abington Heights High School near Scranton, Pennsylvania. He started out working with his brother's AAU program: the NEPA Sharpshooters. After graduating from Bloomsburg University, Jim began teaching and coaching at Abington Heights, working with the freshman program for two years. Both of those teams made it to the District championship, with the 2nd team winning the district title and going undefeated at 24-0. He then took a job as the freshman coach at Scranton Prep and coached there for three years, with his last year finishing undefeated at 26-0 and winning the district title. Jim went back to Abington Heights again for two more years and helped them to league titles. At the same time he was also working with the Sharpshooter program coaching teams of 14- and 15-year olds traveling up and down the east coast. After moving to New Jersey, Jim worked for Coach Haughey and Hunterdon United program in the spring of 2007 and is currently the JV girls’ coach at Phillipsburg High School. Coach Manning is a 2nd grade teacher in the Bethlehem Township School District in Asbury, New Jersey.

ROGER MICHALOWSKI  has been the head coach for the girl’s basketball team at Immaculate Conception School for the past three years.  For the 2005-06 season, the 4th grade girl’s team went undefeated and won the league championship and a post-season tournament championship.  For the 2006-07 season, the 5th/6th grade girl’s team won a post-season tournament championship.  Roger played basketball from grade school through Junior college.  He was the starting guard junior and senior year at Manville High School and for two years at Raritan Valley Community College.

NATE MOORE graduated from North Hunterdon High School in 1997; he earned his bachelors degree at West Chester University, and masters in education at Holy Family University. He coached for five seasons (1997-1999, 2002-2003) in the Clinton Community Athletics basketball league. Coach Moore served three seasons (2003-2006) as Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Bridgewater- Raritan High School. His responsibilities included head freshman and JV coach, as well as position coach for guards in the program. Currently Head Boys Basketball Coach at Delaware Township School where they recently won the 2008 Tourill (Kingwood) Basketball Tournament. Nate is a teacher at Hunterdon Central High School and is in his seventh season as Head Baseball Coach at Delaware Township School.

DARRIEN PINKMAN  has 12 plus years of coaching experience. Darrien is currently the Basketball Operations Director for Mansfield Township, as well as referee coordinator for the Warren Hills Youth Basketball Association. He has spent multiple years coaching boys and girls ages 8-15. Darrien has also spent many years coaching and supporting some of New Jersey and North East Pennsylvania's largest summer camps. Coach Pinkman played college basketball at Centenary College.

NICOLE SAVINO is currently the Freshmen Girlʼs Basketball coach at Phillipsburg High School.  She is a graduate of Brandywine Heights High School where she was a three-year varsity starter, two time MVP, 2002 All-Berks selection, and 1,000 point scorer.  She then went on to play basketball for four years at Moravian College.  While at Moravian she helped her team to four consecutive MAC Conference championship games and a trip to the NCAA's. She graduated in 2006 with a degree in chemistry and is currently teaching at Phillipsburg High School.

HANI SOLIMAN played high school basketball at Pocono Mountain East High School in Stroudsburg, PA. Hani graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters in Math Education. Hani is currently working at Prudential Financial, and co-owner of an internet based t-shirt company. Coach Soliman has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Phillipsburg HS with both the JV and Varsity girls program. Coach Soliman is returning to Hunterdon United, after coaching the U11 boys in 2007.
